Generator Fuel Tanks

Generators Keep Your Business Running

When the power goes, everything goes – refrigeration, lights, electric motors – everything. When the power stops, operations stop. When operations stop, profits stop as well.

Just stop and think for a moment about all the processes that electricity keeps running:

  • Manufacturing machinery
  • Computers
  • Safety equipment and measures
  • Cooling units
  • Feed belts
  • Packaging machinery

Of course, the loss of power is a large setback to any facility, compromising profits, productivity, and safety. To make sure that blackouts do not result in catastrophic problems for companies and their manufacturing, warehousing, or other facilities, almost all companies keep back up generators on hand.

Determining Optimal Storage Tank Size

Different volume and outage concerns call for different storage tank solutions. Not all companies will need a 20,000 gallon storage tank. Conversely, a 1,000 gallon storage tank will not work for a large company.

Things to Consider:

  • Number and duration of blackouts
  • Facility size
  • Start up, delivery, and per unit costs

Small to Mid Size Generator Fuel Storage Tanks:

  • Useful for areas with few outages or with short blackouts
  • Small storage tanks require frequent fuel, shipping, and delivery charges.
  • Ideal for small facilities that do not require large amounts of power
  • Low-cost start up
  • Higher per-unit and shipping charges

Large Generator Fuel Storage Tanks

  • Useful for areas with heavy or extended blackouts
  • High volume purchasing means lower fuel and shipping costs
  • Ideal for large facilities that require large amounts of power and multiple generators
  • High-cost start up
  • Lower per-unit and shipping charges

Fuel Tank Varieties

There are three main types of fuel storage tanks – each with their own positives and negatives. Facilities using generators always have one or more storage tanks to be sure that adequate fuel is always on hand.

Things to Consider:

  • Storage needs
  • Safety
  • Available space
  • Ease of use

Sub-Base Tanks

  • For fuel storage of 1,000 gallons or less
  • Double walled, steel construction
  • Small, above ground tanks situated below generator base

Underground Storage Tanks (USTs)

  • For fuel storage of 1,000 gallons or more
  • Fiberglass-reinforced plastic or heavy gauge steel construction
  • Costly, extra equipment required to prevent spills or overflow
  • Corrosion protection measures must be taken for tanks and pipes
  • Leaks, spills, repair, and maintenance are difficult and expensive to rectify

Above Ground Storage Tanks (ASTs)

  • For fuel storage of 1,000 gallons or more
  • Double walled steel construction with built-in secondary containment
  • Less expensive and more convenient to install, maintain, and repair than USTs
  • Impact, ballistic, and fire rated for safety
