What are the advantages of an above ground fuel storage tank?

When it comes to Above Ground Fuel Storage tanks, safety is of the utmost importance. When choosing the right storage container for your fuel storage needs, whether it is gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, or any other type of fuel, Above Ground Fuel Tanks (AST) is the safest option. They pose far less risk than underground storage tanks (UST), thus why they are recommended worldwide. Having an Above Ground Fuel Storage tank extends beyond safety, however, there are advantages of having an above-ground fuel storage tank, some of those advantages are listed below.

  • Early Detection of Leaks – The biggest advantage of an Above Ground Fuel Storage Tank is that visual inspections are possible. If you have an underground storage tank, a leak can go undetected for a significant amount of time because it cannot be visually inspected for signs of corrosion or damage. Homeowners and business owners with leaking underground storage tanks usually only catch the leak when they observe that the ground is damp or is emitting a smell at which point a significant amount of contamination has already taken place. With an Above Ground Fuel Storage Tank, you can spot the warning signs of a leak early and address it much sooner.
  • Easy Access for Inspections & Replacement – Since above-ground tanks are installed in locations that are easy to access such as parking lots, besides storage buildings, and so forth, they can be regularly inspected and replaced easily. The ease of replacement is especially valuable for commercial purposes, as fuel demands for a business can increase as the business expands. With an Above Ground Fuel Storage Tank, you don’t have the large cost of excavation or backfilling. Therefore, upgrading to an Above Ground Fuel Storage Tank is significantly less expensive. An Above Ground Fuel Storage Tank can also be easily transported to another location if your business or family moves.
  • Less Expensive Cleanup Costs – Early detection and ease of access mean less expensive cleanup costs if a leak occurs in your tank. When a storage tank leaks, the property owner is liable. You are required to promptly clean up pollution that has spread to any surface bodies of water, nearby drinking water, and all contaminated soil. You are even responsible for the cost of cleaning up any pollution that has spread to other properties. If you regularly inspect your Above Ground Fuel Storage Tank and act as soon as a potential leak is noticed, the amount of environmental harm and contaminated surface area will be significantly less than that of an underground fuel storage system. Above ground, Fuel Storage Tanks are mounted on a cement slab normally, so this will also help to prevent the quick spread of contamination and reduce the amount of remediation in case of a leak.
  • Longer Lifespan – An additional advantage of an Above Ground Fuel Storage Tank is that it has a longer lifespan than an underground fuel storage tank. Eventually, all storage tanks will begin to corrode and need to be replaced but underground storage tanks are more susceptible to corrosion. The process of corrosion is sped up by moisture in the soil and other factors such as certain types of backfill and the soil’s pH acidity. Above ground Fuel Storage tanks are not affected by these factors which allows them to have a longer lifespan.

The photo above was a costly removal of a Leaking Underground Storage Tank (UST). The EPA was involved and the station is still inoperable.

Thanks for pointing out that with an above-ground fuel storage tank, you can spot the warning signs of a leak early and address it much sooner. I think that even if you had an above-ground storage tank it would be smart to look into tank monitoring systems that could help you keep track of everything so that you could catch a leak even faster. I think that would also help make sure that you knew exactly what was going on with your tank at any given time which would be helpful when deciding on when to refill it too.

I appreciate that you mentioned that one of the benefits of above-ground storage tanks is that they are easy to access and so are easier to inspect. It would also probably be nice because it would make it easier to have it cleaned and maintained so that it could stay in better condition for longer. That would probably help make sure that you didn’t have to replace your fuel tank as often and so could save money in the long run as well. Thanks for detailing the benefits of above-ground fuel tanks.
