Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tanks (DEF)
Diesel Exhaust Fluid, or DEF, is a urea-based chemical compound designed primarily for use in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems in order to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, otherwise known as NOx. Envirosafe Fuel Storage Systems provides a wide range of above ground storage solutions, with tanks of up to 30,000 gallons capacity and individually designed to meet our clients’ specific needs.
What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid?
Diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF, is designed for use in SCR systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. It is a urea-based chemical produced from raw fossil fuel sources such as natural gas, coal, and a variety of other petroleum based products by dissolving solid urea of high purity in de-ionized water. It is non-toxic, non-flammable, stable, and requires no special handling.
How is Diesel Exhaust Fluid Used?
DEF is used in conjunction with catalytic converts in the SCR system to reduce levels of NOx released into the atmosphere from vehicles emissions. During operation, a small amount of diesel exhaust fluid is injected into the exhaust upstream of a catalytic converter. There is vaporizes and decomposes, forming ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia then converts nitrogen oxides into inert nitrogen and water.
Storage and Usage of Diesel Exhaust Fluid
DEF is non-toxic, and safe for humans, animals, and the environment. No special precautions need to be taken when storing or dispensing diesel exhaust fluid. Simply follow the normal storage and dispensing procedures used for gasoline and diesel fuels.
Envirosafe – Above Ground Storage Solutions for Diesel Exhaust Fluid
The SCR system requires access to diesel exhaust fluid at all times. Without it, the system is useless. Envirosafe offers double wall steel above ground storage tanks of up to 30,000 gallons capacity for DEF storage.
Envirosafe above ground storage tanks comply with all AST EPA and NFPA regulations for impact, fire, and ballistics. Each tank we offer is pre-engineered for your DEF storage needs.
